DSLR POWERPOINT NOTES:
- Mirror system inside lets you preview through the same image that is being captured on film.
- one major way that DSLRs are different from cameras or phones are detachable lenses.
- A basic lens that comes with a camera body in a “kit,” is usually not too expensive.
- if you are buying a camera and the price seems really low, make sure the price includes a lens.
- Often camera bodies are sold by themselves and you need to buy the lenses separately.
- many people use telephoto lenses when shooting distant landscapes to compress perspective.
- HIGH ISO value means the sensor will be MORE sensitive to light.
- This means it will take LESS LIGHT to get the right exposure.
- ‘’Fast’’ lens has a bigger maximum aperture.
- it is also more expensive but worth it, even if you don’t need the largest aperture
- This is because lenses perform better at 2 stops smaller than their maximum aperture.
- if a lens has a maximum aperture of f1.2, it will perform best at f 2.8.
- longer lenses APPEAR to have a shallower DOF because they are magnifying the subject.
- this then flattens the perspective and makes our eyes think the DOF is shallower.
- the “correct” white balance setting tells the camera how to make your whites and grays neutral.
- CA: camera does everything BUT lets you choose brightness, depth of field, picture style by pressing the Q button.
- P: camera sets shutter speed and aperture, but you can choose ISO, AF/MF, white balance.
- Tv: you choose shutter speed, camera chooses appropriate aperture.
- Av: you choose aperture, camera chooses appropriate shutter speed.
- A-Dep: camera chooses aperture, shutter speed combo to get best DOF.
- fraction: focal length divided by lens diameter.
- the denominator becomes the f-stop number.
- the smaller number actually represents a larger opening.
- camera shake: occurs with a shutter speed slower than 1/ [focal length] of a second.
- InternationalOrganizationfor Standards – number that describes film’s sensitivity to light.
SURREALISM
I personally love taking pictures of the sky, whether it’s morning or afternoon. I enjoy photographing different angles of the world, and for this assignment i really wanted a simple image to convey this idea. Without overpowering the photo with extra add ins, i focused on the sky itself, and used the water to signify two different worlds.
Frida Khalo is a very famous Mexican painter who focused on surrealism, modern art, and symbolism. Each piece of art portrays some kind of deeper meaning, which is also one of the reasons i enjoy her work. It not only is eye catching, but also makes the audience connect the painting to a personal situation or idea.
COMPOSITION IN PHOTOGRAPHY
- Why do you think composition in photography is important?
Composition is important as it directs the eyes of the viewer, and gives the audience a ”visual anchor”. We are able to learn more about composition through photographs and images.
2. What draws you in when looking at photography and art?
Personally, bright colors and smiling faces draw me into a photograph. I think that it not only looks fun and appealing, but also makes you happy when viewing it.
3. Have you been to any museums and where? Did you get inspiration to create art while viewing the work?
I sadly have not been to any cool museums. In the near future, i plan on visiting and getting the opportunity to view different types of artwork
WRRITEN REVIEW
- Aperture controls how much light enters your camera. Shutter Speed controls how long light enters your camera. ISO controls how sensitive your camera is to light.
- In low light conditions where you want to use a fast shutter speed, you may need to increase your ISO.
- When shooting in Aperture Priority mode, your shutter speed will change as you change your aperture. When shooting in Shutter Priority mode, your aperture will change as you change your shutter speed.
- Autofocus settings can be used to lock onto subjects as they enter a specific area (AF area modes), track eyes across the frame, and much more. AF modes are versatile tools that take the guesswork out of manual focusing on moving targets.
- Incident light metering will give you consistently correct exposure results, because it won’t be fooled by subject reflectivity.
- White balance is a camera setting that establishes the true color of white. This produces a baseline from which all other colors are measured.
- Depth of field is the area of acceptable sharpness in front of and behind the subject which the lens is focused. Put simply, it refers to how blurry or sharp the area is around your subject. A shallow depth of field refers to a small area in focus. Often the subject is in focus, while the background is blurred.
- Metering Mode” refers to the way the camera measures the brightness of the subject. Drive Modes are the shooting modes in your camera, such as single shooting (where one image is taken at a time), continuous shooting, self-timer mode and more.
- Exposure compensation is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image.
